The outside area (east side)
We go around the building 🏠 continuing on the east side. We'd like to add a palisade fence to continue the construction and create a private area on this side of the building.
Step 1: Still using our trusty crowbar, make the three holes that will hold the 8 x 8 cm Douglas fir posts 3 metres long (if you've been following along, you can already see posts in the images 📷 in the previous article. They were made of acacia and not really straight, so we planted them one day and took them out the next... Sleep on it 🌙). The posts were planted with a sledgehammer to a depth of 70 cm. And as 2 people were needed for the manoeuvre... we didn't really take any photos...
Step 2: Align the posts and fix the 6 x 4 cm horizontal rafters on which the cladding boards will be aimed. Trim the female tongue of the last board of the building to fit the 1st board of the palisade, to get a good alignment.
Don't forget to do a little digging with a pickaxe ⛏️ to ensure that the earth slopes gently in front of the fence.
Step 3: Fix some horizontal strings to guide us as we put in the screws that will hold the cladding in place. And then start sawing 🪚 the cladding boards and laying them...
The job finished with 2 short falls of a metre, perfect optimisation!
